Ms Julie Johnson

Headteacher Governor

Term of office start date: 01/09/15
Term of office end date: 31/08/19

I spent many years in a large Mainstream Comprehensive School as an English Teacher then Head of English and then as Deputy Headteacher in charge of Key Stage 4. I was then seconded as Associate Head to a challenging Mainstream Comprehensive School in another authority on a Department for Education initiative. I was one of 17 Deputies in the country selected for a place on this Associate Headship Scheme.

I was then invited to join another local authority as a School Improvement Adviser. It was during this period that I was asked to take over a failing SEBD School which was in Special Measures. I took on this challenge, really enjoyed the experience and ‘got the bug’ for the SEBD Sector. Penkford is my second Headship.

This is my fourth year as Head of Penkford School; it remains a privilege to be at a school where we offer a very specialised provision to a cohort of pupils with a particular set of needs.

As Head, I value the time spent with our Governors, who have such a wide range of experiences and skills. As a result, they share in the leadership of the School by evaluating the strategies I plan.

I also value our wonderful school staff. Their commitment to our School really does make a big difference.

Headship is a big job, but very rewarding. Personally I think it is the best job in the world.

I am Parent Governor at the school attended by my daughters in Liverpool. This year is my final year in this role. I am Chair of the Curriculum and Standards Committee. This keeps me in touch with developments in the Mainstream sector

In 2012 the Director of St Helens CYPS invited me to join the Management Board of YOS, and the Management Board of PACE /Launchpad. I enjoy both of these opportunities to support and challenge the provision that is offered in St Helens.

And finally, when I am not at Penkford, I enjoy going to the gym and listening to live music. I am also a faithful Manchester United supporter.
